Our teacher, Penny Adeney, has studied with both Paivi and Dorothy, and has developed a program specifically for babies who are not yet mobile (up to approximately six months of age). Classes focus on the use of music in nurturing positive communication between parent and child, and aim to create a calm, relaxing environment which can be recreated at home. Through songs, rhymes, massage and other physical activities, parents learn how to stimulate their baby’s development in the following areas: Auditory awareness and listening skills Important reflexes Muscle development and stretching Balance and trust Spatial awareness Co-ordination Parents gain insight into sounds which are pleasing to a baby’s ear, and learn a range of songs, rhymes and lullabies which can be used at home, enriching daily routines such as changing, bathing and sleep time. This allows us to run all the different instrumental group lessons simultaneously, which provides a ‘one stop shop’ for families with children learning different instruments. Most families come on either Fridays or Saturdays, but feel free to mix and match, working around birthday parties, etc. Group Lessons Children play together with other students of that instrument. Fun activities and games are designed to reinforce technical concepts, consolidate repertoire already learned and to give the children the opportunity to learn by watching others. Violin, cello and piano students can attend Friday or Saturday group lessons (…or a mixture! You don’t have to book in, just turn up on whichever day works best for you). Beginner classes are always at 4pm, with more advanced students attending subsequent classes throughout the afternoon. Singing and flute students attend on Fridays.     ");

The program assists the development of the following skills: Pitch Rhythm and beat Dynamics (loud and soft) Number skills and counting Language and literacy Taking turns and sharing Sequencing Size and direction Vocabulary Finger independence Children are usually quite ready to begin learning a musical instrument by the time they ‘graduate’ from the program at about age 3. Many activities in our program are specifically designed with the future in mind. The program very gently lays foundations crucial to successful, happy and stress-free Suzuki cello, flute, guitar, piano, singing or violin lessons. The Learning Environment Our program consists of a weekly group music class of approximately an hour. Skills are developed through nursery rhymes, spoken speech patterns, action songs, finger play, circle songs, story telling and other musical activities. All children have several opportunities in each class to play various instruments including the xylophone, glockenspiel, drum, triangle, claves and two tone woodblock. We believe that children learn most – and are happiest – when they are relatively calm. In aiming for a calm learning environment, we focus on creating beautiful sounds and keeping ‘noise’ to a minimum, thus fostering musical sensitivity and keen auditory skills. Each class of around eleven children is taught by two teachers. ‘Team teaching’ allows the teachers to move smoothly from one activity to the next, eliminating the time between activities where the children can become distracted and lose their focus. Also, it is necessary for teachers to observe the children carefully to fully understand what their educational needs are, and therefore tailor the class to those needs. Using our Music for Little Ones repertoire as a core, new rhymes, action songs, finger play, circle songs, story telling and other musical activities are introduced. Not only do the children acquire a large repertoire of songs and rhymes, but their singing voices are nurtured and encouraged using vocal activities designed specifically for young voices. All children have several opportunities in each class to play various instruments including the xylophone, glockenspiel, drum, triangle,claves, chime bars, castanets, cymbals, maracas, guiros and two tone woodblock. Students also learn about a variety of orchestral instruments and have the opportunity to see, touch and hear them through the involvement of guest instrumentalists. Music for Preschoolers classes assist the development of pitch, rhythm and beat, dynamics (loud and soft), number skills and counting, co-ordination (fine and gross motor), observation skills, concentration, taking turns and sharing, self discipline and self control, listening and sequencing skills and memory. More specific to future lessons on an instrument, the program helps children’s development in the following areas: accepting help from a teacher confidence in playing or singing for others caring for and respecting musical instruments developing ensemble skills and becoming accustomed to group lessons When individual lessons do begin, the children have already acquired many skills necessary for stress-free learning. "," The Music Cottage - The Suzuki Approach . The Suzuki Approach . Dr Shinichi Suzuki, a Japanese violinist and teacher, developed a successful method of teaching music to very young children in the same way as they learn to speak. His primary goal was to develop the whole child through the study of music. The Suzuki teacher seeks to help unfold a child’s natural potential to learn and, through music, become a sensitive and happy person. Dr Suzuki recognised that every child successfully learns to speak the language in his/her environment, largely because of the rapid development of the brain before the age of five. He believed that music was no different, and that if a rich musical environment was created, any child had the potential to become musical, even if the parents considered themselves ‘tone deaf’! The very young child is keen to learn, loves watching other children, and delights in developing – and practising – new skills, thus making music education fun and exciting for both parent and child. The Music Cottage Suzuki Program Group Lessons and ‘Music for Juniors’ Brand New Beginners – Orientation Month Choosing an Instrument Frequently Asked Questions How To Enrol Why So Young? Dr Suzuki’s educational philosophy is based on one simple idea: to develop musical ability in the same way as we teach a child to speak. When you think about it, language acquisition is the most successful form of education there is. Dr Suzuki believed that music education should be equally accessible and achievable. He called his method the “Mother Tongue” approach. It is our goal, as Suzuki teachers, to develop the musician within each child as if it were a ‘first language’. Just with other languages, the earlier we start, the better. There are several features of Suzuki learning: The Role of the Child’s Environment. Just as children learn to speak by ‘absorbing’ the language in their environment, musical ability can be nurtured in this way. By providing lots of exposure to musical experiences, (eg group classes to supplement individual lessons) ability can be fostered and nurtured in a natural way, as the children absorb the musicality around them. The Age At Which We Start. Children who have started very young seem more at ease with their instrument later on – like a first language. Although ‘progress’ is understandably slow (even invisible at times!) in the first few years, it’s very interesting to see things fall into place when the child’s coordination, concentration, and maturity all come together. Ability is Accessible to Everyone. Dr Suzuki believed that any child could become musical, with the right environment, education and effort. Moreover, he saw it as a birth-right of every child to grow up with music in their hearts. If a child finds their music a little tricky, we don’t dismiss them as untalented – we give them extr      ");

If we are immersed in a rich musical environment from a young age, music becomes part of who we are.    "," The Music Cottage - Why Music? . Why Music? . Music touches the heart and enriches the soul. If we are immersed in a rich musical environment from a young age, music becomes part of who we are. It is now widely recognised among Early Childhood Music researchers and professionals that children benefit greatly from regular exposure to quality music as early as possible in their lives, ideally well before birth. No time is too early to begin formal education, providing it is developmentally appropriate. At The Music Cottage, we believe children benefit in many ways from music education. We aim to foster and nurture: Confidence Concentration and attention Self esteem Memory Social skills Self discipline Self respect Sensitivity Perseverance at a task Listening and observation skills Co-ordination (fine and gross motor) A positive attitude to learning and challenge A lasting enjoyment of music In the long term, the study of a musical instrument helps develop many important skills necessary for future academic success. Most importantly, we believe children should have positive early musical experiences, encompassing fun and true achievement. This sets in place many foundations for happy, successful future learning.     ");
